Candidate Forum: The four candidates for the District 5A House of Delegates race and the two contestants for the Carroll County State’s Attorneys Office will join us for a candidates forum at the September meeting. Our August Commissioner candidate forum was a tremendous success with over 130 FPAC members attending and all 14 candidates providing answers to questions posed by the Board and members of the audience. This is an important election for Finksburg, with issues arriving at the State House which will have a direct effect on funding for local projects and community planning. Please join us again when Delegates Carmen Amedori and Nancy Stocksdale face off with challengers Kimberly Petry and Dr. Robert Wack for discussion on the House of Delegates race. Incumbent Jerry Barnes and challenger Richard Nacewicz will face questions about their State’s Attorneys platforms .

Subdivision News:

Seven – Eleven: The property owner has informed us that the plans for a Seven – Eleven at the intersection of Bethel Rd. and Rt. 140 have fallen through. The developer did not want to accept responsibility for the cost of a traffic signal at the intersection as directed by County and State staff. The owner is open to ideas from the community for how to use the former office site of Glen Falls Realty – either renovating the existing building or building a new facility. If you have some ideas to pass along, contact Mr. Sterling Walsh at Glen Falls Realty

Sheetz Alert: The rumor that Sheetz Convenience stores has contacted Mudgett Auto Body to locate a store at Rt 140 and Dede Rd. is unconfirmed. To date, the County Bureau of Development Review claims it has not been contacted for a site plan submittal. We’ll continue to keep our ear to the ground. Perhaps a new Board of Commissioners will be interested in creating some aesthetic façade controls which would preclude the construction of a typically gaudy Sheetz store or any other hideous monstrosity anywhere in the County.

AT&T Site: AT&T continues to propose a rezoning of its site below the communications tower in Finksburg. The proposed rezoning would allow any number of retail / commercial businesses to locate there and is staunchly opposed by area residents and FPAC. The Commissioners held a hearing on the rezoning of this property on September 16th and declined to take any action at that time, largely because over 30 residents showed up to voice their opposition. However, Commissioner Dell appeared to favor the rezoning and the Commissioners could still take action before their terms in office expire in November.

Library: The FPAC Board of Directors wrote the Commissioners in August that our organization wholeheartedly supports the plans for a new library in Finksburg but that the proposed site on the NE Corner of Deerpark Rd and Rt 91 is inappropriate. FPAC prefers a site which is within the core of our community, whereas the site at Deer Park is not likely to help define a community center and is not large enough to support an expansion for either the library or a future senior center. Current plans call for a first floor library with headquarters for the Carroll Library System on a second floor. We will keep you informed of any further developments on this exciting news as FPAC has been the driving force for locating a library here since its inception in 1997. Member Laura O’Calahan has been working closely with the Library Board of Directors.

Primary Results: The members of the FPAC Board of Directors were very pleased with the results of the September 10 Commissioner race. The remaining candidates, Neil Ridgely, Commissioner Julia Gouge, Dean Minnich, Perry Jones, Vince DePalmer, Jeannie Nichols, and Betty Smith will all participate in another FPAC candidate forum on October 24th at Sandymount United Methodist Church.

Litter Pickup: The next FPAC litter pickup along Rt 91 from Deer Park Rd to MD Rt 140 is scheduled for October 12th. We’ll meet on the parking lot at Finksburg Plaza, near Roy Rogers, at 8 am. We’ll supply safety vests, trash bags and litter pickup sticks – you supply about 2 hours, gloves and an enthusiasm to keep Finksburg beautiful.
